Dark Circles Under Eyes: Causes, Types and What Helps in Trinidad

Dark circles under eyes with under-eye cream and mask for brighter, fresher-looking eyes | Prana Beauty TT

Dark circles aren’t all the same. Some are brown, some look blue or purple, and some are just shadows. Each type has a different cause, so a cream that works for one person may do nothing for another.

This guide shows you how to work out which type you have, what’s behind it, and what you can do about it at home.

The Three Types of Dark Circles

Dermatologists usually sort dark circles into three groups. Many people have a mix.

TypeWhat it looks likeMain cause
PigmentedBrown or dark brownExtra melanin in the skin
VascularBlue, purple or pinkish, often with puffinessBlood vessels showing through thin skin
StructuralA shadow that changes with lightThe shape of your face, a hollow under the eye, or fat loss with age

The stretch test

Stand near a window and gently pull the skin under one eye sideways with your finger.

  • The colour stays the same: it’s mostly pigment.
  • The colour fades: it’s mostly shadow (structural).
  • The colour turns more purple or blue: blood vessels are the main cause (vascular).

This test comes from a 2016 review in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology. The same review notes that pigmented dark circles are more common in darker skin tones, which means many people in Trinidad and Tobago deal with this type.

What Causes Dark Circles?

According to Cleveland Clinic, the most common causes are:

  • Genetics. If your parents have them, you’re more likely to.
  • Sun exposure. UV triggers melanin, and the skin around the eyes gets hit every day. Most people skip sunscreen there.
  • Rubbing your eyes. Friction darkens skin over time and can break small blood vessels.
  • Allergies and eczema. Itchy eyes lead to rubbing, and inflammation widens blood vessels. Dust and pollen can make this worse.
  • Poor sleep. Tired skin looks paler, so blood vessels show more.
  • Dehydration, alcohol and smoking. These make under-eye skin look dull.
  • Age. The skin under the eyes thins and loosens, so vessels and hollows become more visible.

What Helps: Home Care That Works?

1. Protect the area from the sun

For pigmented dark circles, this matters more than any cream. The 2016 review reports that pigmentation around the eyes can improve with sunscreen alone. Pat a gentle sunscreen up to the orbital bone every morning and wear sunglasses when you’re outdoors.

2. Stop rubbing

If your eyes itch often, find the cause, whether that’s allergies, dust or makeup. Treat the itch instead of scratching. Remove eye makeup by soaking a cotton pad and holding it on the lid, not by wiping hard.

3. Cool the area for puffiness

A cold compress, chilled spoons or cold tea bags for 5-10 minutes shrink swollen vessels and ease morning puffiness. This works best on vascular dark circles and lasts a few hours.

4. Sleep with your head slightly raised

An extra pillow stops fluid from pooling under the eyes overnight.

5. Use a dedicated under-eye product

The skin under your eyes is thinner than the rest of your face. Strong serums and heavy face creams can sting or cause milia (small white bumps). An eye product is made for that area.

Under Eye Cream vs Under Eye Mask

Prana has two products for this area, made for different times of day.

Under Eye Cream: a lightweight cream you can use morning and night. It sits well under sunscreen and concealer, so it suits Trinidad’s heat during the day.

Under Eye Mask: a richer overnight treatment. Apply it before bed, leave it on and rinse it off in the morning.

Many people use the cream in the morning and the mask at night.

How to apply

  1. Take a rice-grain to pea-sized amount for both eyes.
  2. Dot it along the orbital bone, the bony edge under your eye, not right against the lash line.
  3. Tap it in with your ring finger. It’s the weakest finger, so it presses the lightest.
  4. In the morning, wait a minute before sunscreen or concealer.

Where Vitamin C Fits In?

Vitamin C slows melanin production, which makes it useful for brown, pigmented circles. If you already use 10% Vitamin C Face Serum on your face, keep it on the cheekbones and away from the thin skin right under the eye, where it may sting. Our guide to vitamin C for skin covers how to use it. For darker patches elsewhere on the face, see how to fade dark spots and uneven skin tone.

What No Cream Can Fix?

Be realistic about structural dark circles. If yours are shadows from a hollow under the eye, no cream will fill it. Creams can hydrate the area so it looks smoother, and concealer can hide the shadow. Filling the hollow itself takes a treatment such as fillers from a dermatologist.

Deep genetic pigmentation also fades slowly and may never disappear completely. Daily sun protection and consistent care can still make a visible difference.

When to See a Doctor?

Cleveland Clinic advises getting checked if the darkness or swelling appears under only one eye, if it comes on suddenly, or if the swelling is heavy. These can point to an allergy, infection or another health issue rather than a skincare problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to see a difference?

Puffiness can improve the same morning with cold and a good night’s sleep. Pigmented dark circles take longer. Expect at least 8-12 weeks of daily care and sun protection before judging results, because skin renews itself slowly.

Can I just use my face moisturiser under my eyes?

You can if it doesn’t sting or cause bumps. Many face creams are too heavy for this area or contain fragrance and actives that irritate it. If you notice watery eyes, redness or small white bumps, switch to an eye product.

Should I start using an eye cream in my 20s?

Starting early doesn’t hurt, especially if you spend long hours in the sun or on screens. In your 20s the goal is hydration and sun protection. Worry about wrinkles later.

Do men get the same benefits from under-eye products?

Yes. Under-eye skin works the same way in men and women. Men often skip sunscreen around the eyes, so adding an eye cream and sunglasses can make a noticeable difference.

Can I put under-eye cream on my eyelids?

Keep it to the under-eye area and the outer corners. On the upper lid, product can move into the eye as you sleep and cause stinging or puffiness.

Final Word

Start with the stretch test. If your dark circles are brown, protecting the area from the sun and not rubbing it will do the most. If they’re blue and puffy, cold, sleep and elevation help most. Shadows need concealer or a dermatologist. For all three, the Under Eye Cream by day and the Under Eye Mask at night keep this skin hydrated.
